Travelling With Aging Parents to Kodaikanal — What Actually Helped

Sharing this because trips with elderly parents come with a different set of priorities than most travel content accounts for, and I went through a fair amount of trial and error figuring out what actually mattered before booking.

My parents are both in their early seventies. My father has knee issues that make stairs and uneven terrain genuinely difficult, and my mother tires more easily than she likes to admit. Planning a Kodaikanal trip with them meant rethinking almost every assumption I had from previous trips with friends or as a solo traveler.

The accommodation search took longer than expected because most listings do not mention details that matter specifically for older travelers, things like whether the property has stairs to the main living area, how far the parking is from the front door, or whether the bathroom has any accessibility considerations at all.

Called Cottages Kodaikanal and was upfront about my father’s mobility limitations. Rather than just pointing me to whatever was available, they specifically asked about his needs and recommended a single-level cottage with parking right at the entrance, a walk-in bathroom setup, and a flat, even path from the parking area to the front door.

What made the difference during the stay:

No stairs meant my father could move around the property without any assistance or hesitation, which mattered enormously for his independence and mood throughout the trip. The single-level layout also meant my mother did not have to manage stairs while carrying anything, which sounds minor until you have actually navigated a multi-level property with an older parent.

The kitchen let my mother cook familiar food at her own pace rather than adjusting to restaurant menus and timings that rarely accommodate an elderly person’s dietary preferences or appetite. The caretaker checked in more frequently than usual once he understood the situation, without ever making my parents feel like they were being monitored or fussed over.

We kept the itinerary light, Bryant Park and a short visit to Kodai Lake, with most of the trip spent simply enjoying the cottage’s balcony and the change of scenery rather than checking off attractions.

For anyone planning a trip to Kodaikanal with elderly parents:

Be specific about mobility needs when you call. The cottages in kodaikanal offered by Cottages Kodaikanal include single-level and accessibility-friendly options, and being upfront about what your parents specifically need gets you matched to something that actually works rather than a property that looks fine in photos but creates problems once you arrive.
